Historically, mahogany was the high wood used in Chippendale fixtures carving. 

There have been several alternatives for this sort of wooden within the 18th century which include sorts from Cuba, Honduras, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic.

 Most cabinetmakers favored Cuban wood for its dense, heavy person and fantastically near grain. When carving these woods, the natural grain of the piece was improved and accentuated.
